Mobile App Design
Happy Hive
Buzzing together, building a happier hive: where family tasks flourish.
The Problem
Coordinating household tasks between family members is a constant struggle for parents. Current family task apps lack intuitive design, collaboration features, and motivation for kids to participate.
The Solution
A bee-themed mobile app with chore assignment, reminders, rewards, and a shared family calendar that parents and kids actually want to use.
How might we help parents efficiently manage their households, reduce stress, and foster a happier and more harmonious family environment?
Research Findings
Secondary research pointed us toward reward systems that motivate kids, color coding that makes calendars easier to read, age-appropriate chores, higher participation when kids help build the list, the value of routine, and calendars that stay visible to everyone in the family.

Competitor Analysis
We reviewed five existing apps: Homey, Visual Daily Schedule, Taskie Husky, Levelty, and Chorsee. Three of the five were too simple, two had excessive tutorial screens, all used bright colors and cutesy icons, and two lacked visual cohesion.
Working parents with school-aged kids need a means to organize all the activities and tasks their family members are involved in, because they often forget or miss activities without a solid organizational plan.

Usability Testing
Onboarding was smooth, but the home button was unclear, the reminder and add-task buttons confused users, and the nav icons read as ambiguous.
Iterations
We removed the separate add-event page, added an animated splash screen, refined the beehive home icon, relocated the add-task button, and added more bee-themed imagery throughout.

Next Steps
A kid-focused, gamified UI and a dedicated teen UI.
More animations, working reminder pop-ups, and calendar sync across profiles.
